New York Anime Festival is 8 days away! As such, I’m here to teach you how to make your very own Misa Amane (Death Note) cosplay outfit. The most basic and famous outfit by Misa Amane is her black Goth outfit. It looks complex with all the layers but it’s really quite simple. Even without the big ass blades on her arms, you can still pull of the look easily. All it takes is a little money, some patience and creativity.
Note that this is not fit for boys but I do have something special for you too!
1. The Clothes
Breaking it down, her outfit is arm warmers, a dress (or a tank and a skirt), fishnet stockings and cut up thigh highs. You don’t want to spend too much money on these parts as most of the actual cosplay is within the accessories. So the majority of these you should have lying around your room somewhere. If not…
1a. Arm warmers can be made from cut up socks or you can buy them from Hot Topic or Socks Dreams. I would go with Hot Topic because it’s local and even if they aren’t plain black, you can either flip them inside out but the more Goth-like, the better. For added effect, cut them at the top where it’ll reach your upper arm.
1b. For the actual clothes, you can either go for a dress or a tank and skirt. The tank you can buy just about anywhere, namely Hot Topic or my favorite Old Navy. The skirt you can either cut up black jeans/long skirt or buy them from just about any store, Forever 21 is your best bet. The dress is a little harder to find but you can either cut up a dress or buy it from Forever 21 or Hot Topic. In the end, any short, no sleeve outfit will work.
1c. Fishnet stockings are everywhere. If you can’t find one, go to Target or anywhere that sells hosiery.
1d. For the cut up thigh highs, you can again buy from anywhere that sales socks/hosiery and cut them up yourself.
1e. Shoes sadly can’t be made but Hot Topic usually has sales on their shoes online. If you still can’t afford them, go with any black shoe.
2. The Accessories
Stock up at Hot Topic or Clarie’s. Really all you’re looking for is punk/goth like jewelry that has little or no coloring other than silver that is. Don’t go overboard though. You’ll mainly need a couple necklaces, chains, metal bracelets and belts. However you’re free to do with what you think looks best. If you really want the blades, go look on Ebay.
3. The Hair
Pigtails and straight hair; really nothing to it. For the hair bands, you can buy colored from Claire’s or Target. Misa had black hair in the movie but blonde in the series, it’s up to you for which you’ll go with. If you’re really dedicated, you’ll bleach your hair and cut your bangs. Not recommended though.
4. The Makeup
You’ll want to achieve as close to perfect skin as possible so use foundation or concealer to cover up those blemishes (it helps add to the innocent, doll look). For the eyes, outline your eye completely with liquid eyeliner with the bottom having a very thin line. If you want, you can also put on fake eyelashes but make sure they’re not too long. It also helps if you have green circle contact lenses.
And that’s all too it! Good luck to all you cosplayers. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
