Anime or Asian hair is the new hotness! Thanks to the rising popularity of Anime, hairstyles have changed dramatically and are becoming more creative and wild. While the emo look can still maintain its cool, it’s time for something different. There’s different ways to achieve anime hair, but all follow the same basic steps which I’m about to teach you! I do use this tutorial to do my and my boyfriend’s hair and so far it’s worked really well for me.

Styling Products
Whether its wax, gel or a combination, make sure it’s at its strongest hold. I recommend using wax/gum/rubber because it’s easier to style than gel. As soon as you put it in, your hair instantly become flexible for styling; however it does take some getting use to. It also makes your hair more natural looking than gel.

Recommendation: Anything from the Tigi, Sexy Hair Concepts or the Japanese brand Gatsby.

Cutting Your Hair
You don’t have to cut your hair but it does make things easier. It’s hard to explain how you want your hair cut but for the most part people call it the “Asian mullet” which is basically a layered mullet.

Recommendation: Go to an Asian stylist and bring a photo of the style you want.

How to Get Anime Hair

1. First you’re going to wash your hair and dry until its bone dry. Afterwards you can straighten your hair but it’s not necessary.

2. Next you’re going to get whatever product you’re using (let’s say wax), and put a small amount all over your hands.

3. Then scrunch or rub your hair. This should make your hair flexible enough to stylize.

4. Now you can grab a little more wax if necessary and start forming your spikes. The style you want will determine how you do your spikes. A basic technique is twisting the ends together. If you’re going for long, eye poking spikes, you’re going to need a lot more than just wax.

5. By now your hair should look the way you want. If you feel it’s not strong enough, use hairspray. After that, you’re done!

Most of it is about creativity with styling it but once you get that, you’re pretty much an Anime hair pro! Everyone’s hair is different so I would love to hear your tips and tricks. I plan to do my hair for NYAF so be on the look out.

Here’s some tutorial videos brought to you by Gatsby.
